Recommended Books

Here's a few of the books in my own reference library. Recommended for small business owners.

  1. The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It

By Michael Gerber. The modern classic for small business owners, or those dreaming of starting their own business. Gerber makes a strong case that most small business owners are just “buying a job” when they start a business. They typically assume the role of technician or manager instead of adopting the critical new role of entrepreneur. Gerber’s mantra is to "work on your business, not in your business." A key means to doing this is through systematization of your business. An easy and enjoyable read that will open your eyes.

  2. E-Myth Mastery: The Seven Essential Disciplines for Building a World Class Company

By Michael Gerber. Read this after reading E-Myth Revisited. It provides more depth about the material introduced in E-Myth Revisited. Systemization is covered in more detail. A good reference.

  3. Work the System: The Simple Mechanics of Making More and Working Less

By Sam Carpenter. As a business owner having the proper mind-set is crucial. Sam helps you "get it" in the first part of his book. The second part gets into systematizing your business. I especially liked some of the insights he relates such as Dancing-In-The-Meadow syndrome and The World is 99.9% efficient. Lots of real-world examples based on pulling his own business back from the brink. It's an easy read.

What I found interesting is that even though Sam and myself came at systemization on our own from different starting points we converged on numerous ideas and constructs. No doubt eventually you would too if you chose to figure out systemization on your own. But why struggle for months or years doing that? That's not what your business is about.

PDF Document Tools

  1. PDFCreator

This is a free PDF creation tool and it's easy to install.

There's two ways to use it. Print your document to the PDFCreator printer which then produces a PDF file. Or, run it directly and point it at the files to convert. It can create various file types such as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, PCX, PS, EPS as well as PDF. PDFCreator lets you control security on PDF documents: encryption and password protection.

If you don't need most of the fancy stuff in Adobe Acrobat or you can't justify Adobe's high price then you'll like PDFCreator. It's free and it works.

We use it and like it.
